The U.S. Coast Guard is looking for three men overdue on a Friday boating trip near Whittier.

The boaters had been headed from Montague Island to Whittier aboard a 20-foot Duckworth jet boat when they were reported overdue Friday night, according to a Coast Guard statement.

“Last contact was at approximately 4:00 p.m., Friday, when they called family reporting they were experiencing engine issues and intended to transit in on their kicker engine,” Coast Guardsmen wrote.

A Kodiak-based helicopter crew and a Valdez-based boat crew conducted initial searches for the men Saturday, with air assets planned to continue the search into Saturday night.

Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 1st Class Jon-Paul Rios said he didn’t have word of any signs of the boat being found so far, or whether the crew had or were wearing life jackets or survival suits. Whittier police officers had found the boaters' truck still parked at the local boat ramp, however.

"That's why we assume they're still out there," Rios said.

Conditions in the search area included 2-mph winds and 2-foot seas, with a water temperature of 44 degrees.
