The 2018 Iron Dog will not have a ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage. Originally scheduled for Saturday, February 17th, the event that sees race fans line 4th Avenue won't take place due to "tough economic times" in Alaska. That's according to a statement released by the Iron Dog Board of Directors.

"The downtown start was a fantastic addition to our race, but it was simply too expensive and complex to continue," said Board President Jim Wilke. "We look forward to another great race as we celebrate 35 successful years of Iron Dog."

"The World's Toughest Longest Snowmobile Race" is still scheduled to start at Big Lake on Sunday, February 18th.
