Ice, fog and high winds have caused a massive bypass mail backup in Bethel.

The spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service, Dawn Peppinger, says at one point there were about 100,000 pounds that needed to be delivered. The Bethel Post Office serves about 20 smaller villages.

Peppinger says bad weather has prevented several carriers from getting regular flights out for several weeks.

The Anchorage office is trying to use larger planes to fly mail directly to some villages with bigger runways.

Peppinger says they've been able to reduce the backup volume by about half.
