An Aleknagik man, who has multiple assault convictions, was arrested Tuesday after Alaska State Troopers say he assaulted and strangled a family member. 

Just before midnight, troopers received a report of an assault inAleknagik. During their investigation, they found 29-year-old Christopher Nielson threatened a family member with a "dangerous instrument", AST said. 

Nielson was arrested with the help of the Dillingham Police Department, and taken to a local jail on charges of assault in the second-degree, assault in the third-degree, assault in the fourth-degree and violating conditions of release. 

Troopers say alcohol appears to be a factor in the assault.  

Pending an arraignment, he is being held without bail.
