A man spotted his friend’s stolen car Saturday night at a Fairview grocery store and a friend chased the vehicle – only to watch it crash right in front of him.

A call about an occupied stolen vehicle reached police just before 7:30 p.m., according to APD spokeswoman Nora Morse.

The friend of the car's owner said the vehicle, a green GMC Yukon SUV, was first spotted at the Carrs Safeway store on Gambell Street. He then tracked it to Denali Street, where it crashed into a fence between East 11th and East 12th avenues. Three people got out of the car and ran away.

Police arrived and used a K-9 unit to look for the driver of the stolen car, but didn’t immediately find the suspect.
