Rep. Dean Westlake (D-Kiana) announced his resignation as a member of the Alaska State Legislature Friday, as information a sexual relationship with a minor when he was 28 years old and had been working in the Kotzebue police department.

KTVA uncovered the story by searching through publicly available court documents. When asked about the party's process for vetting candidates, Jay Parmley, executive director for the Alaska Democratic Party, said the party does not CourtView the candidates it chooses to support.

Parmley also says the party did not have an obligation to review Westlake's before endorsing him as a candidate.
