A fire that destroyed a house in Palmer Wednesday morning left both of its occupants injured as they raced to escaped, first responders said.

The blaze on the 3900 block of North Vista Drive was reported at about 8:30 a.m. according to Ken Barkley, the Mat-Su Borough’s deputy director for emergency services. Crews from the Butte and Palmer fire departments responded within minutes, but the home was completely engulfed in flames.

“The neighbors saw it and it was already fully involved when they saw it,” Barkley said. “One (resident) had to jump out a second-story window and the other escaped but just fell on the ice coming out.”

Neither person’s injuries were life-threatening, Barkley said, but the home was a total loss.

Red Cross of Alaska spokeswoman Lisa Miller said the group is assisting the two displaced occupants.
