Alarm at Spenard business leads police to sleeping man
A 50-year-old man was arrested late Thursday after he allegedly broke into a car-rental firm on Spenard Road, where officers found him unconscious.
Anchorage police first responded to an alarm from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car at 4707 Spenard Rd. at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to spokesman MJ Thim.
Responding officers announced they were entering the business, ultimately arresting Kevin Brower.
“What we found was that when we got to the scene, the window next to the front door was broken and officers could also see an individual walking around on the second floor,” Thim said. “When we found him inside the office, he was asleep on one of the chairs.”
It wasn’t clear whether Brower had attempted to take anything from the building, Thim said. Officers were awaiting toxicology reports on whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“His stories of what he was doing there weren’t quite consistent,” Thim said. “First he said he was headed to the airport, and then he said he was in Soldotna.”
An employee at the Enterprise, who didn’t want to give her name, said Friday that Brower was apparently trying to get out of the cold overnight. Nothing was missing from the office, and he had apparently been warming up a Hot Pocket in the office microwave.
Police took Brower to the Anchorage Jail, where he was held on charges including second-degree burglary.
