Bad loss could stall UAA volleyballers' NCAA drive
The University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team suffered what may wind up being a very expensive loss Thursday.
A Montana State University-Billings team 12 games under .500. came into Alaska Airlines Center and toppled the Seawolves -- and possibly their post-season hopes -- with a four set win posting scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.
Junior outsider hitter Leah Swiss did her part for UAA registering 21 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Casey Davenport has 42 assists.
It's a hugely disappointing loss considering MSUB (9-20, 5-14) was merely playing out the season. But the Yellow Jackets looked like a group with a purpose and never went away despite dropping the first set.
The Seawolves (19-10, 14-6) entered Thursday's match ranked seventh in the West region. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA West Region Championships. A win would have almost certainly sealed a trip to the post-season. Now, those plans are on hold.
It will be a long weekend. They'll find out Monday afternoon how costly the loss was. The 3:30 pm get-together to watch the selection show would have been more watch party than intel gathering, but now they'll sweat it out and hope.
