Miss Alaska USA 2017: 'I want to empower women'
Miss Alaska and Teen Alaska USA were crowned last week and the pair are already getting ready with what they want to accomplish this year. That, and getting prepared for the national competition this summer.
Alyssa London is Miss Alaska USA. She is a Tlingit entrepreneur and motivational speaker whose family is from Ketchikan. According to her website, she has worked with Microsoft, Nike and Stanford University, where she graduated from. She has a weekly radio show on KOAN as well, where she brings a voice to the travel and tourism industry. London said she loves to go to schools and speaking to youth about striving for education as a means to achieve their goals.
"I want to empower women to look to entrepreneurship as a means to achieve their own independence and self-sufficiency," she said about what she was going to focus on this year.
Tana Bartels is from Fairbanks, and was crowned Miss Teen Alaska USA alongside London. Bartels grew up playing softball and hockey, which she said is a little different. Currently she is attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks and is pursuing a business management degree. Bartels focus this year will be outreach for "anti-bullying and the importance of personal health awareness."
As far as the competition looming in the summer, the pair are getting ready to represent Alaska. London mentioned that they are looking for a woman who is articulate, but also self-sufficient and who can have a cause that they stand for. Their overall goal, however, is to bring the Miss USA crown to Alaska for the very first time.
