Turn the clock back fifty or sixty years. At that time, many Alaska Natives lived almost entirely on a diet of wild foods. Thanks to the film archives at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, you can see what it took to live a true subsistence lifestyle.

In this footage, captured by Marvin “Muktuk” Marston, as he recruited for the Alaska Territorial Guard, you can see a beluga whale hunt that occurred sometime in the 1940’s. The location of the village is unknown.
