It may not be the first sport that comes to mind when thinking of Bethel High School, but swimming has taken hold at the school -- some 400 miles west of Anchorage.

Not surprisingly, a lack of experience was an early factor. The Warriors just completed their first season.

"I took lessons 10 years ago. That wasn't competition. It was basic fundamentals," said senior Gareth Rice.

The issue of knowledge extended to coach Mike Calvetti.

"It's been an eye-opener," said the first-year head coach. "Like having your mouth hooked up to a fire hydrant and they open it up, so, you're learning everything, you've got to be a sponge."

But unlike some other sports where competition supersedes help, Calvetti has received plenty of support.

"The other coaches from all the other programs, have been so valuable to helping us out," he said.

Their season is now complete and they expect to build on their first campaign next year.
