"The Stars We Are"' singing competition is back for another year, to discover and promote Alaska's local music talent. KTVA 11's Daybreak and Anchorage's Downtown Partnership is coming together to promote the six-week long competition.

The open auditions are this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, at Williwaw in downtown Anchorage. You can guarantee a spot by sending your name and preferred date in a Facebook message to "The Stars We Are".

"The Stars We Are" can be a stepping stone for singers and songwriters aspiring to become working musicians, and it's a good opportunity to get feedback from professionals in the industry.

It's a similar format to national vocal competitions such as, "The Voice" or "American Idol". Musicians who make it through auditions this weekend will get to perform in round 1 in front of a panel of judges and a live audience at the Williwaw. At the end of the night, you'll either make it to the next round or be voted off. The process repeats until there are three contestants left. Those three winners will get to perform for more than 10,000 people at the KTVA Downtown New Year's Eve Celebration.

Each week, outgoing contestants will perform on Daybreak's, "Mic Check in the Morning" on Friday mornings during the 9 a.m. show.
