TMHS, JDHS want to merge football, cheer, hockey in 2018
Alaska's capital city is home to two high school football teams, that may change.
The Juneau School District announced Thursday it wants to merge the football teams at Thunder Mountain High School and Juneau Douglas High School into one program that would be housed at JDHS, starting in 2018.
District leaders say both programs have lost money over the last few years. JDHS had a negative balance of $5,689 at the start of this season, while TMHS found itself $100,821 in the red.
The district also wants to merge cheer and hockey programs from both schools at JDHS.
It has until November 1 to submit the request to the Alaska School Activities Association, ASAA, by November 1. Board members are expected to vote on the proposal early next month.
