Sexton also holds court in the classroom -- where she maintains a 4.084-grade point average, with advanced courses. That's by design as Sexton eyes another goal. "It's just something to boost my GPA, I'm aiming to be valedictorian, and that's how it's going to get there," Sexton told KTVA Sports.

Sexton's determination has her head coach's admiration. "It's hard to be a student-athlete, it's a difficult balance, and Melanie does a great job at that," said Nikiski head coach Stacey Segura, as Melanie Sexton hopes to continue her career at UAA or UAF.
