One in two women experience intimate partner or sexual violence in Alaska, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Abused Women's Aid In Crisis, Inc. (AWAIC), with the help The Allstate Foundation, is putting on a donation drive this weekend to raise awareness and help those who have been impacted by violence.

Thursday morning on Daybreak, Diane Johnson with the Allstate Foundation donated Heidi Hill with AWAIC a leather purse, for AWAIC's annual gala happening in November, plus a $10,000 check which will go towards benefiting the victims AWAIC services. Hill said getting a donation like this is huge for the shelter.

"This is a huge present for us," Hill said."It will go directly toward helping the victims we serve. A lot of people that come to the shelter come just as they are, with nothing, they have run from an unsafe situation. This will help us get them the things they need immediately."

This Saturday, you can donate items to AWAIC at the YMCA between 2 and 6 p.m. located at 5353 Lake Otis Pkwy.

Some items requested for donation are:

  • Towel
  • sleepwear
  • linens
  • diapers
  • hygiene items
  • unopened aspirin
  • medical supplies
  • socks
  • phone cards
