A major first step in restoring Anchorage indoor sports complex The Dome to use occurred this week, as the structure was initially reinflated following its January collapse under heavy snow.

The building, off Dowling Road near Minnesota Drive, appeared to be fully inflated Saturday afternoon following its gradual failure on the night of Jan. 21.

Officials at the facility last weekend, when its fabric was being laid out for reuse, said a number of inflation and deflation cycles would be conducted in the coming weeks to test The Dome’s structural integrity.

At a news conference earlier this month, announcing plans to bring the facility back online, staff at The Dome said they hoped to reopen the venue by Nov. 1.
