A Bethel man is in custody after injuring a woman's face with a gun and barricading himself inside his home.

Bethel Police say around 9:23 Saturday night, a caller reported a woman was being assaulted by a man armed with a gun on Atsaq Street.

Police identified the man as 37-year-old William Wassilie of Bethel. When they arrived, he pointed the gun at one of the officers and when asked to drop his weapon, he refused the order, then proceeded to barricade himself inside his home, according to a statement from Bethel Police.

Police say the female told officers Wassilie hit her in the face with the gun, which caused visible injury to her face, and was afraid he was going to kill her.

"Attempts to contact Mr. Wassilie inside of the residence were unsuccessful," Bethel Police write in a statement on Sunday. "At approximately 2254 hours, a team of officers forced entry into the residence and after a struggle were able to take Mr. Wassilie into custody. Officers recovered the shotgun believed to be used in the assaults."

Wassilie was charged with two counts of assault in the third- and fourth-degree, misconduct involving weapons in the fourth-degree and resisting arrest.

Police believe alcohol was a factor.
