An earthquake in the Haines area Saturday afternoon was felt across much of Southeast Alaska, according to initial reports.

The 5.1 temblor struck at 3:38 p.m. about 62 miles northwest of Haines, based on initial data from the Alaska Earthquake Center’s website. Its depth was just three-fifths of a mile below ground.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Did You Feel It? Website for the quake, dozens of responders in Haines, Juneau and Whitehorse, in Canada’s Yukon, all reported feeling it.
