A 24-year-old man’s body was found Monday night in a water search near Petersburg, after he had last been seen on a dock in the area.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers were notified just before 7 p.m. that Jase Payne, who was last seen at the Rocky Point Resort earlier Monday, hadn’t been found. Members of his family had been conducting hasty searches of the Tongass Narrows nearby, according to an online dispatch.

“Petersburg [wildlife troopers] and Petersburg Police Department (officers) searched the area and contacted known associates with no results,” troopers wrote. “At 11 pm, AWT was notified that the body of Jase Payne was located near the dock of the resort.”

Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said that no cause of death had yet been determined, but that foul play isn’t believed to be a factor in the incident.

Payne’s next of kin have been notified. His body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
