Hoonah hunter dies near Dillingham in self-inflicted shooting
A 65-year-old Hoonah man died Friday while hunting in the Dillingham area, after Alaska State Troopers say he shot himself with a large-caliber handgun in an apparently accidental discharge.
Word of the incident involving Brian Leslie Heinrichsen near Amanka Lake, nearly 26 miles west of Dillingham, reached troopers from Tikchik Adventures at about 3:30 p.m. Friday according to an online dispatch. Responding troopers found Heinrichsen dead.
"Investigation so far reveals that Heinrichsen was hunting with a friend when he shot himself in the chest with his .454-caliber Casull, while removing it from his shoulder holster," troopers wrote.
No foul play is suspected in Heinrichsen’s death, according to troopers, and his next of kin have been notified. His body is being sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
