Army sending more Alaska soldiers to Afghanistan
The Army has almost doubled the number of Alaska soldiers deploying to Afghanistan this month, increasing the number from 1,200 to 2,100.
The first wave of soldiers from the 4/25 Airborne Brigade Combat Team deployed over the weekend. The rest of the soldiers will leave over the next month.
The Army called for more troops to support Operation Resolute Supporting, advising and assisting Afghan Security Forces.
Their deployment is expected to last nine months. A deployment ceremony will take place on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Friday.
