The death of a teenage boy this week at the school in the Bering Sea community of Savoonga is being examined by Alaska State Troopers.

Village police in Savoonga, a community of about 730 people on St. Lawrence Island, told troopers Tuesday afternoon that 14-year-old Floyd Akeya had “collapsed in the gymnasium during gym class,” according to an online dispatch. His next of kin were notified.

“CPR was conducted, but at about [3:32 p.m.], Akeya was pronounced deceased,” troopers wrote. “State troopers from Nome responded to investigate.”

Troopers spokesman Megan Peters said a week after Akeya's death that no foul play was suspected.

Staff at the school declined to comment on the incident Friday. A message left with the Bering Strait School District, which operates the school, wasn’t returned.

Akeya’s body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
