A 20-year-old man missing in Bethel was found dead this week in the Kuskokwim River near town, local police said.

Norman Paul, 20, had last been seen on Aug. 10 near the local slough walking toward the south side of the boat harbor, according to a post on the Bethel Police Department’s Facebook page asking for help finding him.

Bethel Police Chief Burke Waldron said Thursday that a boater had discovered Paul’s body floating in the river off Front Street.

“The body was found a little after 9 o’clock Tuesday evening, floating in the river, and taken to shore and identified by family based on clothing that was being worn,” Waldron said.

Investigators haven’t determined whether foul play was involved in the case, Waldron said. People who were with Paul shortly before he was last seen have reported that they were drinking with him.

“The circumstances of his last sightings are still under investigation -- we know it was early-morning hours,” Waldron said.

Paul’s body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy to determine his cause of death.
