Man convicted of knifepoint attempted sexual assault
An Anchorage jury has found a 20-year-old Guatemalan national guilty of attempted sexual assault.
The case stemmed from April 2015, when prosecutors say Eric Gomez met the victim just six days after arriving in Anchorage.
Gomez met the victim at the Anchorage Bus Accommodation Center, and after drinking together, the victim told Gomez she wasn't interested in having sex, prosecutors say.
That's when Gomez went to the kitchen to grab a knife and held it to the victim's throat while pulling off her pants.
Two other occupants of the apartment heard the struggle and pulled Gomez off of the woman; she fled the apartment naked from the waist down and called police. Gomez was arrested on the scene.
Gomez faces up to 30 years in prison. His scheduling hearing is set for January 5.
