The Alaska State Fair kicks off Thursday in Palmer. As you start planning your trip to the fairgrounds, here's a look at some of the events and themes going on each day of the fair.

Energy Day

THURSDAY, AUG. 24
Come celebrate Alaska Oil and Gas Association's 40 years of oil production from Prudhoe Bay. Energy Day focuses on the energy that drives Alaska's economy. Make your fair memories last forever by stopping by the Plaza to get your picture taken in a free photo booth.

Fair admission is just two bucks as long as you donate two nonperishable food items per person between noon and 2 p.m. (must be through the gate no later than 2 o'clock). Donations will help reduce hunger in Alaska.

Kids' Day

FRIDAY, AUG. 25
This day is for the kiddos -- kids 12 and under get in for free all day long! Just bring a donation of two non-perishable food items per child.

  • Martin Buser and puppies meet and greet
  • Diaper Derby and Toddler Trot
  • Kids' Day Games
  • HELLYEAH concert (for the big kids)

BP Day

SATURDAY, AUG. 26
It's BP Day at the fair. Head over to the BP booth in the Pioneer Plaza for a free gift.

Experience Alaska Day

SUNDAY, AUG. 27
Dedicated to all the wonderful things the Last Frontier has to offer -- it's Experience Alaska Day.

  • Alaska Seafood Throwdown cooking competition
  • Rodeo Alaska Champions Tour (starring Alaska’s top cowboys and cowgirls)

AARP Day

TUESDAY, AUG. 29

Cosplay Day

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 30
Get out those costumes because its a day dedicated to dressing up as your favorite superhero, video game, or movie character -- it's Cosplay Day at the fair! Think you're going to get the most compliments on your costume? Enter to win prizes in four different categories including best costume.

A food drive is going on as well. Non-perishable food items are being taken as donations.

  • Pokéhunt, all day lures
  • Character Parade
  • Balloon volleyball and Human foosball games

Alaska Grown Day

THURSDAY, AUG. 31
Show your Alaska pride by wearing your official "Alaska Grown" apparel. Those who are wearing their official "Alaska Grown" swag gets a $2 discount on admission the whole day.
