He’s an Alaska legend who critics compare to artists like Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffet. Jim Varsos, also known as Hobo Jim, performed for a “Mic Check in the Morning” Friday.

He recently released his eighth album titled, ‘My Wild and Wolven Ways,’ and said the collaboration is with some of the best musicians in the state. It’s taken him about 8 years to put it together, but it takes time and effort to do it right, he said.

His most iconic song, “The Iditarod Trail Song” is an original he wrote in 1982. It’s also one he never thought would have taken off like it did.

“It’s been a blessing to me because I like being a part of the musher community, but being able over all these years to have that song in the elementary schools and play the elementary schools … it’s just an honor the kids learn that song,” Varsos said.
