Hundreds of people received a holiday gift Tuesday at the annual “beanie box” event at Bean’s Cafe.

Director Lisa Sauder said the event is meant to bring cheer to the homeless. Members of the community put together boxes with a variety of items, including socks, tooth brushes and hand warmers.

Sauder said no box is ever the same and for the people who receive them, it’s a bit of a surprise.

“We always tell people, if you were only going to be receiving one holiday gift this season and you were homeless, what would you want in the box?” Sauder said. “Of course warm weather gear like socks and hats and gloves are always appreciated. A card with maybe a little inspirational note. Things like nail clippers, candies all kinds of little holiday treats.”

Sauder said Bean’s took in 600 boxes for distribution to the homeless. She thanked the community for their generosity.
