The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT) wants to hear from people who commute on Minnesota Drive. About six months ago, DOT started planning three separate phases of the project. The three sections include:

  • Hillcrest Dr. to Tudor Rd.

  • Tudor Rd. to C St.

  • C St. to New Seward Hwy.

DOT says its main objective is to safely decrease congestion on the road.

“We’re always interested in safely getting people as quickly as possible to their destination,” said DOT spokeswoman Jill Reese. “And as our city grows, those areas that are expanding definitely need improvement.”

The project is in the study phase, so construction would not begin for several years.

“We’ll be looking at lighting, we’ll be looking at moose crossings and we’ll be looking at congestion – just about every problem that you could come up with,” Reese said.

Money for the project would come from both state and federal funds. Reese said it’s important for people to provide opinions on the potential project before it’s too late.

“We’re always encouraging people to get involved in the earliest planning sessions that we can manage because that’s when they have the largest ability to make changes,” Reese said.
