Development deal could bring big changes to Anchorage
A huge development deal is in the works that could mean big changes for two popular Anchorage corridors.
The Anchorage Municipality’s Department of Economic and Community Development wants to flatten the city’s aging Health and Human Services building on l Street and replace it with senior housing.
Chris Schutte, director of Economic and Community Development also wants to build a brand new DHHS facility on East Tudor Road and Elmore Road — complete with a grocery store, hotel, shops, restaurants and even more housing.
“The request was very simple, it said two things, said Schutte. “One, we need a new building for DHSS. We want to own it and we don’t want to lease. Secondly, we want you to redevelop the existing site into something new.”
Before crews can break ground next spring, the development deal must first be approved by the Anchorage Assembly.
If you have questions, there’s a project open house June 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Muni’s permit building at 4700 Elmore Road.
