June is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, and the goal is to raise awareness for shelter cats.

At Anchorage Animal Care & Control (AACC), 27 cats were looking for homes as of Friday morning.

“There’s a lot of different personalities, lots of different looks,” Laura Atwood with AACC said. “Tabbys to tuxedos. Playful to just mellow and calm. You can find them here right now with 27 cats waiting for homes.”

Atwood said the shelter has not seen an increase in adoptions in June so far, but the month is about getting the word out.

“It’s not just June that our cats need homes,” she said. “It’s a great month to encourage shelters and rescue groups to remind the community that cats are waiting for homes, but we are here all year, our cats are here all year.”

Atwood has been posting on the AACC Facebook page frequently to showcase the animals looking for adoption.

Cats at AACC cost as little as $62, but the price varies depending on the cat, its vaccines and whether it is spayed or neutered.

AACC is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.
