The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1547 announced its support of Ballot Measure 1 in an Anchorage news conference Wednesday afternoon.

The union represents about 5,000 members statewide. Business manager Mike Hodson said his organization supported the repeal of Senate Bill 21 — Alaska’s recently enacted oil tax — because they don’t believe it guarantees anything for the state.

“We believe SB21 is a failed policy,” Hodson said during Wednesday’s conference.

In a written statement released shortly thereafter, opponents of the ballot initiative said they weren’t surprised: Sen. Bill Wielechowski, one of the lead supporters of the repeal effort, is also employed by the union outside the legislative session.
