Derrick Slaughter is seeking his first term as Seat E on the Anchorage School Board.

A graduate of Bartlett High School, he plans to bring a “fresh, new ideas and innovative strategies” to the board. Slaughter has a son who is a student in the Anchorage School District, citing that as one of his main motivators for running.

“I’m fully aware of all the challenges that not only Title I schools have but neighborhood schools have as well,” said Slaughter, adding that his background as an entrepreneurial lends itself to ideas for the school board to bring in alternative funds.

Slaughter says he also wants to increase parent involvement, based on talks with ASD teachers.

“We have to bridge that gap between parents, kids and our educators,” he said.

The 2015 Municipal Election will be held Tuesday, April 7.
