At the celebration of life for merchant mariner Eldon Gallear, a photo of the man and mementos of his life were on display. People honored the Wasilla resident Saturday and remembered Gallear’s military service.

During World War II, Gallear was severely injured when a torpedo hit his ship. He ended up on a life raft where sharks tried to bump him off.

But he survived.

Gallear was a part of the 2014 Last Frontier Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. where he saw the memorial for the war he fought in more than 70 years earlier. When the tour got to Arlington National Cemetery, he stayed on the bus. All the gravestones were just too overwhelming for him.

“When I see all those gravestones boy, I don’t know,” he said at the time.

Gallear died last month at the age of 91.
