Parnell signs bill regulating Medicaid payments for abortions
Planned Parenthood says it will fight back after Gov. Sean Parnell signed a controversial abortion bill into law this week.
With the governor’s signature, Senate Bill 49 becomes law in 90 days. The legislation defines the circumstances under which abortions can be covered by the state’s Medicaid program. Under the new law, Medicaid payments can only be made for “medically necessary” abortions — those in which the woman faces a “serious risk” to her life or physical health, or cases of rape or incest.
Planned Parenthood says the legislation is unfair, restrictive and harmful for low-income women. Members call the bill unconstitutional, and say they’ll fight the legislation in court.
