Daybreak’s Teacher of the Week, Debora Roberts, has been teaching music to young people for about 17 years and says it’s a way she could pass on her love of music.

“I teach because I love to see them learn,” Roberts said. “I love to see them as they get older utilizing the skills [they’ve learned].”

Roberts, a music teacher at Rogers Park Elementary School, credits her early success to her involvement as a section leader in her high school band. She played the clarinet and says it helped her graduate high school.

“There’s research that shows kids who can keep a steady beat can read,” Roberts said. “It develops that part in their brain.”

After every lesson, Roberts says her kids leave knowing they’ve worked hard and mastered a concept, which gives them confidence in other school subjects.

“It’s not just a fun class,” Roberts added. “If my kids leave my classroom and say that was just a lot of fun, we’ve wasted time.”
