Anchorage police have arrested a man for sexual abuse of a minor after a 14-year-old girl was found dead outside a Muldoon church Sunday.

Stewart W. Emery, Jr., 45, was arrested for one count of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, according to a statement from the Anchorage Police Department. He made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Emery was with Megan Sophie Johnson when she was found dead in the alcove near the Muldoon Road Baptist Church front door Sunday afternoon. According to witnesses, she had also been hanging out with her 15-year-old boyfriend.

Officers said they did not see any obvious signs of trauma and that she was fully clothed when she was found, according to court documents.

Her boyfriend initially told authorities he had met with Megan Saturday near the Cabin Tavern and that she “appeared to be intoxicated,” according to a sworn affidavit signed by APD Detective John Foraker. They then went to the church, where they met up with Emery. The 45-year-old had alcohol with him, which he admitted to sharing with the teens.

He also admitted to having sex with the 14-year-old girl. When asked how old he believed the girl was, “Emery responded that he thought she was 15 or maybe 18,” Foraker wrote.

Exact cause of death will be determined when toxicology results come in, which could take about eight weeks.
