Get Out: Snow Tubing
ANCHORAGE – We got dumped on in Anchorage last weekend and that had many, such as myself, heading outside to play in some of the nicest snow we have seen all season.
Snow tubing at Arctic Valley Ski Area seemed to be the appropriate place to play.
“We opened a little late this year because of the lack of snow, but as you can see we made up for it literally overnight. And so we’re really happy to be open and have a wonderful day up here today,” said John Koltun, president of the Anchorage Ski Club. The Anchorage Ski Club runs Arctic Valley Ski Area.
Last weekend was the first weekend of tubing at the area and conditions couldn’t have been better.
Lots of fresh powder for face shots all day.
Tubing was started three years ago at Arctic Valley and the popularity has greatly exceeded expectations.
“Well it’s kind of funny. We thought it would be really popular with just kids. It turns out it’s really popular for all ages,” Koltun said. “It’s really great to see whole groups teens coming up and using it. It really is a fun family thing and everyone is really having a great time with it.”
One unique thing with tubing is that while you do it for the ride down, you also get a ride up. Think of it as lazy man sledding.
“We like how you don’t have to walk up. The ride up. I like the bump at the end how you go fast and then go off the side. Yeah. It’s good fun,” said the Bold family.
