Record warm temperatures this week have many itching to get outside and take part in summer activities, but in the Matanuska Valley one popular summer activity is already in full swing.

Golf season is typically pretty short in Alaska. That was certainly the case the past two seasons.

The low amount of snowfall this spring means an earlier start to the 2014 Alaska golf season.

For those looking to hit the links immediately, Fishhook Golf Course in the Matanuska Valley has already opened for the season.

“I wish we had a longer season here, but it’s really nice to be able to get out here in April and start playing,” said golfer Terry Simon.

While this golf season is beginning earlier than recent years, it’s not the earliest they have ever opened.

“We’ve had some years where we open up in February. We get the right amount of wind and it blows everything clear, and a couple of warm days and it melts the greens clear,” said Fishhook Superintendent Ryan Pelletier.

Courses in Alaska will likely never compare to the fancy ones found in the lower 48, but ours offer some amazing scenery.

Get your clubs ready, courses in Anchorage should begin opening in early May.
