RUBY – It was a busy night at the Yukon checkpoint of Ruby.

Since four-time champion Jeff King checked in at 6:41 a.m. Thursday, more than a dozen mushers have followed. Veterans Kelly Maixner and Hugh Neff arrived within 40 minutes of each other just after midnight. Mitch Seavey, Ray Redington Jr., Dallas Seavey, Hans Gatt and Joar Leifseth Ulsom all arrived in Ruby before 6 a.m. Thursday.

Just after 6 a.m., veteran racer Aliy Zirkle became the first musher to arrive at Galena. Four-time winner Martin Buser checked in just before 9 a.m., and the mushers remained the only teams in Galena as of 9 a.m. Friday.

But while frontrunner Zirkle has yet to take her mandatory eight-hour rest, Buser has completed both mandatory eight and 24-hour rests.
