It wasn’t a normal case for Alaska State Troopers Joshua Varys, but he went above and beyond the call of duty to help a young girl from the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.

Trooper Varys was dispatched Wednesday to meet a “very sad little girl” whose rabbit, Mr. Cotton Tail, was missing.

After his initial investigation turned up no signs of Mr. Cotton Tail, Trooper Varys asked the girl and her family to meet him at the local Pet Zoo. He surprised her with a new rabbit to “help ease her pain,” troopers said in a statement.

On Thursday, Mr. Cotton Tail was located in the young girl’s neighborhood and turned over to Trooper Varys at the Mat-Su West Trooper Post, troopers said.

“Mr. Cotton Tail is getting reunited with his family and will also get to meet his new playmate,” troopers wrote. “Case closed!”
