The $41 million project features a new wing, an atrium redesign and a new exhibit. The whole first floor will be dedicated to family-friendly activities.

Workers are still putting up the finishing touches inside and outside the 30,000 square foot expansion.

Museum director and CEO Julie Decker said the new space will allow them to share more of artwork and artifacts they’ve had to keep in storage, including 20,000 objects and 500,000 historical photographs.

“We’re really excited that it can tell a broader story of Alaska, from the Alaska exhibition to the Art of the North galleries, to include multiple perspectives from indigenous perspectives to a romantic perspective about the North,” said Decker.

The expansion opens September 15th.
