UPDATE: Police investigate fatal collision as latest Anchorage homicide, victim ID’d
Last updated at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5
The Anchorage Police Department is investigating the events that led up a fatal collision and shooting near Fifth Avenue and Concrete Street early Friday morning. In an updated release from police, they said they believe the incidents were related.
Just after 3 a.m., police received a call of a two-vehicle collision on East Fifth Avenue near Concrete Street, involving a sedan and a truck. One of the sedan’s occupants, 19-year-old Chaduer Chuol, was ejected and later died from his injuries, according to police.
“There was another person inside that same vehicle that had a non-life-threatening gun shot wound,” said APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.
Police have yet to publicly identify the person who suffered a gunshot wound, but confirmed he was a young male.
“[The surviving victim] was in the vehicle when he was shot,” Castro said. “We will still be hearing back hopefully from an autopsy to see if there were any other additional injuries that they might have endured prior to that collision.”
According to Castro, Castle Megastore, an adult sex shop located on E. Fifth Avenue, was struck by a bullet, but no one was injured and the damage was superficial. She also said multiple guns were found in the crashed sedan.
Police are now asking for the public to come forward with information on either of the two incidents.
“What we are really looking for at this point is information from the public about what was going on at this time prior to the collision,” Castro explained. “We believe there are people that know things or saw things, that heard things because we believe that this event perhaps started in that Mountain View area and led its way down Fifth Avenue.”
“It appears that the sedan, which was occupied by Chuol and at least one other male, had been involved in a shooting prior to the collision,” police said in a statement.
Castro said at least one other vehicle was involved in the shooting, but said the truck involved in the crash was not involved in that incident, just in “the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Anyone with information on the crash, shooting or anyone involved is asked to call police at 907-786-8900.
Chuol’s next of kin have been notified of his death, Castro said.
She said Chuol’s death is being investigated as a homicide because state law requires all incidents involving another person “that ultimately leads to the death of someone else” be investigated for criminal activity. His is the sixth death being investigated as a homicide since July 27. Another young man died Friday morning after he was stabbed in the chest, and three young men were shot and killed in separate incidents over the weekend. A woman was also stabbed to death by someone she knew last Wednesday.
This is a developing story; check back for updates.
