Volunteers were busy on Monday getting ready for the annual Help Us Give School Supplies (HUGSS) event that takes place Tuesday at East Anchorage High School.

HUGSS, now in its 17th year, provides free school supplies to Anchorage students in need. Organizer Anne Gauthier said last year they served about 4,700 children and this year, they are expecting similar crowds.

Gauthier said parents or guardians need to accompany children, and although there is nothing to bring, participants will be asked to fill out a form for the Anchorage School District.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and the event will end at 6 p.m. Gauthier is asking people to use the East 20th Avenue entrance for the school and park on the east side of the building.

Backpacks with grade-appropriate supplies are available for every child until they run out.
