On Wednesday, the Anchorage Police Department released the name of a man killed in a Tuesday evening crash. Police identified the the driver as 57-year-old Joseph Pineda, whose family has been notified. The crash is still being investigated.
Anchorage police are investigating a vehicle crash at the intersection of Dowling and Elmore Roads that claimed the life of one of the involved drivers.
Police first responded to reports of the crash just before 5 p.m. A Mercedes SUV and Dodge Durango collided when the Mercedes failed to finish turning onto Dowling Road from Elmore, instead driving “straight into oncoming traffic,” police said in a statement.
“Initial indications are that the driver of the Mercedes may have suffered from a medical incident just prior to the crash,” police wrote.
The driver of the Mercedes, who was alone in the vehicle, was declared dead at a nearby hospital shortly after the crash. The three occupants in the Durango were also treated at a hospital, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to police.
The State Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the driver’s actual cause of death. Their name will be released once their family has been notified of their death.
Dowling Road at Elmore Road was closed for a few hours while police conducted their investigation, headed by the Major Collision Investigation Unit. The road has since reopened.
