Chaz Shanigan, a “person of interest” in Wednesday’s homicide, has been taken into custody, police say.

Original story:

Anchorage police are investigating a homicide after a man’s body was found in Spenard Wednesday morning.

Just after 5:15 a.m., officers responded to a call of a disturbance near the McDonald’s on Spenard Road, according to Anchorage Police Department dispatch.

A body was found in an SUV in the McDonald’s parking lot after police say he jumped out of a window at the nearby Americas Best Value Inn – Executive Suites. Police are still piecing together the exact timeline but say shots were fired at some point.

“The vehicle drove over to a nearby parking lot. When officers found the vehicle, they found him still in the vehicle deceased,” said Lt. John McKinnon. “It’s obvious that he didn’t shoot himself, and so it’s likely that somebody shot at him.”

“Initial indications are that this was a targeted event and there is no public safety concern,” according to an APD Nixle sent out at 10:33 a.m.

APD was able to gather information from witnesses at the scene but say there may be more witnesses who haven’t come forward.

They are currently looking for 21-year-old Chaz Shanigan, a “person of interest” who APD believes has more information about Wednesday morning’s homicide. Shanigan is 5’9” tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes, police say.
