1 dead in hatchet attack inside Fairbanks bar
Fairbanks Police have charged a 49-year-old man with murder after they say he fatally attacked another man with a hatchet at a bar over the weekend.
Sunday evening around 7:15, officers were called to Club Manchu in the 2700 block of Jesse Street on reports of an assault.
The victim, 54-year-old Mark Allen Mitchell, was found suffering from life threatening wounds, was administered CPR and flown to Anchorage for treatment-- where he succumbed to his injuries Monday morning.
FPD reviewed surveillance video and say Brett Matthew Gilbert struck Mitchell on the left side of his neck, causing apparent immediate incapacitation. Police say their initial investigation shows the attack came without warning and without any known provocation. Gilbert continued striking Mitchell with the hatchet in the face and neck until a bystander grabbed him from behind and Gilbert fled the scene, according to Fairbanks Police.
Gilbert was arrested at his residence Sunday night and charged with attempted murder; those charges have been upgraded to first-degree murder.
