Storm damages Gustavus breakwater

By Associated Press 9:43 AM January 16, 2014

The breakwater was built in 2010 alongside a new ferry dock.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – A storm has caused significant damage to a state-owned breakwater in Gustavus.

The Juneau Empire reports (http://is.gd/13WjMq) the breakwater was washed on shore after it broke away from pilings in Tuesday’s storm, which had high winds.

The breakwater was built in 2010 alongside a new ferry dock. Al Clough, the Southeast director for the Alaska Department of Transportation, says the Alaska Marine Highway ferry dock was not affected.

Clough says the state will look at options to re-establish the breakwater, but says none of the options are easy or quick.
