DEC says everything is OK
PALMER – Some people who live near a Palmer landfill are worried about their health.
They woke up Tuesday morning to a stinky smell — a fire they believe was coming from a nearby landfill meant exclusively for construction debris.
Teresa Beck lives less than a mile away. She said the smell was so strong she thought something in her own house was on fire. Later, she saw a cloud of smoke she believed was coming from the landfill.
By Tuesday afternoon the smoke and smell had subsided. Palmer Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Axtell said he no longer had concerns.
Lori Aldrich, the Department of Environmental Conservation’s solid waste coordinator, also visited the landfill. She had the operators dig down to see if there was anything burning underground.
Aldrich found no evidence of any fire or other problems. She said Palmer residents shouldn’t be concerned about health problems in relation to the landfill.
