State plans to reintroduce wood bison to the wild

By KTVA CBS 11 News 7:27 AM August 6, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

After disappearing from Alaska more than a century ago, wood bison are about to return to the wilds of the Last Frontier.

Gov. Sean Parnell has announced the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is preparing wood bison for release next spring, when 50-100 animals from the captive herd at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center are set to be let loose near the Lower Yukon and Innoko River.

The area was selected for its prime habitat and strong local support, according to the governor’s office.
